Tales of Thalurea: The Reincarnation of a Depressive! Chapter 5
Chapter 5:
The Inspector's Visit
That night, Sorin returned home. Usually, he came back with a serious expression, and it took him and Luna a few days to return to normal. But on this night, they were radiant. Sorin picked me up and lifted me as high as he could. Their joy was contagious.
“My son, a quadra-elemental, like in the ancient tales!” Sorin exclaimed, spinning me in the air.
“You’re going to hurt Randy!” Luna warned.
“But is it really that rare?” I asked.
“Yes, very much so,” Sorin said. “Most mages can use, at most, two elements, and in very rare cases, three. A quadra-elemental can do much more than an ordinary mage. You’ll see that in time!”
“But Dad, you can use healing too, right?” I asked, remembering a time when I got hurt by a splinter on the stairs.
“Yes, I can. But as you already know, healing isn’t an element; it’s a type of magic, just like summoning, support, and transformation. It depends on each mage’s preference. It’s harder to identify through tests. Only time will tell which one you’ll focus on,” Sorin explained.
“This conversation is too mage-focused for my taste, and you’ll have plenty of time to learn all this over time.”
Agreeing, Sorin clinked his beer mug against Luna’s and shouted, “We made him well!”
Luna blushed but nodded, delivering a kick to Sorin’s shin.
That night was different for them, and I was happy that, even unintentionally, I had contributed to their good mood.
As agreed, the next morning, Adélia returned, bringing only one assistant.
After greeting Sorin and Luna, they entered. As soon as Adélia sat in the living room, she said to the assistant, “You may go.”
The assistant promptly went upstairs and began inspecting the house, making several notes in a notebook.
Mara passed through the room carrying a change of clothes.
“Frankly, you could have brought someone from the capital for this job, couldn’t you?” Adélia asked, more as a criticism than a question.
Sorin gave an awkward smile, and Luna deflected.
“So, what did you come here for again?” Luna asked, with the same intent as Adélia. “Have you thought about the reward?”
“Yes,” Sorin replied, picking up an old book with a black cover and a faded drawing on it.
“I want a copy of this book. If the copyist makes a copy for him too, that’s fine.”
Taking the book and flipping through it, Adélia smiled.
“Alright, consider it done. I’ll just need a few months.”
“I thought you’d ask for some land or a title, but I should have expected this from you two.”
“A dictionary in the dragon language is very rare. I’ll take good care of it,” Adélia said.
“But the boy’s situation is special. If you need anything else, don’t hesitate!”
“Thank you very much,” Sorin replied.
“Now, I’ll pass on Her Majesty’s orders!”
“Majesty?” Luna asked.
“Yes. Her Majesty of Magic, Nimue, is already aware of the boy and asked me to bring him to the capital. But since I know you don’t want that, I recommended we take care of him here until he turns 8. It was the best I could do,” Adélia said.
The two accepted reluctantly.
“I know how much Luna hates the capital and what you two had to do for this union to happen. Her Majesty also took that into account.”
“If it were just because he’s your son, this wouldn’t be possible, but due to yesterday’s developments, things have changed.”
“I’m assigning some swordswomen to this area, and a teacher will come from the capital to be his tutor.”
“We’re quite far from Andrassi, but I’m sure that if they knew about a quadra-elemental, especially an estame, Andrassi wouldn’t hesitate to send a group of huntresses to capture him.”
“Let them try,” Luna said with determination.
“I know you’re strong and can defend your family, but this no longer depends solely on you.”
“After he turns 8, the boy will go to the magical school of Andor in the capital to finish his studies. Isn’t that great?” Adélia asked.
“In a way, yes,” Luna replied. “On the other hand, we’re deciding how a two-year-old boy’s life will be.”
“As for magical knowledge, Sorin could teach him. He’s already teaching Randy to read; it wouldn’t be hard to do that,” Luna added.
“Sir Sorin’s work at the apothecary clinic is very important, and I know he makes it rain on the crops throughout the region. I think he already does a lot.”
“Not to mention the ‘Garden of Abundance’ in this village. Your seed, capable of generating a quadra-elemental child, is very important to the kingdom. I hope you’re not neglecting your duties, Sir Sorin,” Adélia warned.
“Of course not. I’m well aware of my obligations as an estame,” Sorin replied, irritated.
“Indeed, Sorin does a lot,” Luna said.
“Well, we’re only having this conversation because of the boy’s potential. Otherwise, I would have already left the royal decree and gone,” Adélia said, emphasizing Randolph’s importance.
“A quadra-elemental can cause unimaginable damage. Sorin is a dual-elemental, and his contribution in the battle of Ridan was crucial. In fact, you two can say you ended that battle single-handedly,” Adélia continued.
She tried to flatter them, but only managed to get awkward smiles.
“So that’s it!” As Adélia spoke, the assistant returned and handed over the notes. Adélia said, “The house is satisfactory. I’ll just make some modifications to the training room and bring books for his studies. And for Randolph’s safety, magic training will be kept inside the training room, only going outside if the magic is too dangerous. But I’ll warn the tutor about that.”
“Any questions?” Adélia asked after finishing.
The two had no questions. In fact, they were already prepared for this; they just didn’t expect the kingdom to re-enter their lives so quickly and in this way. But there was nothing they could do.
As soon as the meeting ended, Adélia introduced Brea, the assistant who would stay in the village and report on my progress to Adélia, who would return to the capital.
That night, the house slept in silence.
Six months passed. During that time, women came to modify the training room, and Luna began training in the backyard. I started watching her practice. With the warriors Adélia assigned, Luna’s workload decreased, and she’s only called when a truly strong monster appears.
I’m already mastering the human kingdom’s vocabulary well, and I’m close to fluency. I study every day, and Sorin corrects my mistakes daily, praising me a lot for learning so quickly.
I inherited this from my previous life. I was very good at learning new languages. In this world, there are only four: the human language, the elven language, the dwarven language, and the dragon language. The latter is very interesting because you can’t lie while speaking it. It’s the language of truth, or at least it’s treated that way. Important documents and royal decrees are always written in this language.
Studying languages with Sorin came from his desire to spend time with me since he won’t be able to teach me magic. Except on the days when he needs to go to the village’s Garden of Abundance, we have lessons every day.
The days dedicated to studying and seeking knowledge passed quickly. Learning with my parents has been an enriching experience, something I didn’t have in my previous life. I’m enjoying every moment with gratitude.
