Tales of Thalurea: The Reincarnation of a Depressive! Chapter 4
Chapter 4:
The Test
I turned two years old—two years since I reincarnated into this world with the memories of my previous life.
With that, the inspector sent a letter scheduling my aptitude test.
According to Mara, this test was common at the age of two because that’s when children’s mana channels began to form, allowing the identification of the best type of mana utilization for each one.
It could take a few months if I were a girl, but since I was a boy, it would be done as a priority.
That last part left me puzzled, and I asked why, but Mara told me to ask my parents later!
Days later, the inspector arrived with two assistants. They approached the entrance, and as soon as I saw them, I shouted:
“There are people outside!”
Luna came down the stairs with a serious look, taking long strides. I, on the other hand, was radiant. I really wanted to know about my future. Warrior or mage? Knight Randy or Great Mage Randy?
In fact, I had never felt so childlike as I did at that moment, and it was amazing.
You could see the carriage waiting behind them, with the road dust still settling.
The inspector was the same one from two years ago. She looked at me with a serious gaze.
“You’ve grown a lot,” she said, trying to sound friendly.
“You’re turning into a beautiful estame. But with the parents you have, that’s no surprise.”
Luna stopped behind me with her arms crossed, as if to say, “Let’s get on with it!”
Sorin wasn’t home today. He had been away for two days, and Luna had been looking serious for a while.
“How long, Adélia. How’s the capital?” Luna asked.
“It’s in the same place,” Adélia replied. It seemed like she was trying to be funny, but the joke didn’t captivate Luna.
Frowning, Adélia continued:
“You’re the ones who came to live at the end of the world. Are you hiding from something?”
“Who knows?” Luna replied, shrugging.
“Come on, Luna, you know this is standard procedure!”
“Who would’ve thought you’d have an estame? After all your achievements, you still got this one. Besides, have you chosen your reward yet?”
Those words intrigued me, and I said aloud:
“Achievements?”
Adélia turned to me and answered:
“Your mother, my dear, is a sixth-level warrior. She was known as the Great Berserker of Death in the capital. No one could defeat her, except a sword master. And honestly, I think she could reach the seventh stage, even living in this backwater!”
“Wow!” I exclaimed. I had no idea Luna was so incredible. But I wasn’t allowed into the training room while she practiced, so she couldn’t blame me for not knowing!
Berserker of Death? How fierce was Luna to earn a name like that? Better not get on her bad side!
Adélia’s last sentence seemed like an attempt to win some sympathy from Luna:
“Although, now, as the mother of an estame, she doesn’t need to worry about that anymore,” Adélia added.
And that last sentence buried Adélia’s efforts once and for all.
“So, Adélia!” Luna uttered.
Adélia understood something in silence and said:
“Let’s begin!”
This time, she brought different equipment. Some I recognized, others not so much: cloths with drawn circles, stones and crystals, rolls of parchment.
Everything was spread out across the room, making a mess that drew several sounds of disapproval from Mara.
They asked me to undress and measured every part of my body with a white tape that stretched to the necessary length. Everything was meticulously noted in a notebook with a metal pen. They also collected a sample of my blood with a sharp, transparent crystal, piercing my left thumb. The blood that came out was absorbed by the crystal until it turned completely red.
After that, the crystal was placed in a wooden box with the utmost care.
Next, they drew a circle with various engravings on the floor and an octagram around it, as if they were one and the same.
They asked me to step into the center of the design.
I was excited but also a little nervous. What if I wasn’t good at anything? What if I was a failure?
And if I were a failure like in my previous life?
Would Luna and Sorin still love me the same way?
A gigantic fear took hold of me. When Luna’s eyes met mine, I felt like she would run to hug me if she could.
I kept my small hands clasped together, as if touching myself brought me some sense of security.
Then, they placed several colored stones in different parts of the design, and once they finished, they chanted a spell:
“O Cicelia, goddess of the divine flow, show us if Randolph Rénard has received the magical grace of Magiana or the grace of knowledge from Logarian. You have already given him the grace of life; now help him guide his life in a way that brings joy to the creator gods of this world.”
With this enchantment, the magical symbols glowed on the floor. The light was so strong it blinded me when I looked directly at it! A vibrating sound could also be heard.
“So, a mage,” Adélia declared with a smile. “And what a bright light!” she continued. “Rejoice, child, Magiana has granted you a great blessing!”
I looked at Luna, and she was smiling at me with teary eyes. With that, I felt something burning in my heart. No one needed to tell me anything because, at that moment, I felt my first magical circle spinning inside me!
But the test wasn’t over yet.
“Now we need to see which elements you have an affinity with,” Adélia said. “There are four: earth, fire, water, and sky.”
“Okay,” I nodded.
Taking four parchments, Adélia placed them in front of me on a nearby table.
“Remember what you felt just now? The circle spinning inside you?”
“Y-yes,” I said.
“Can you do it again?” she asked.
“I think so,” I replied, hesitantly. It shouldn’t be that hard, I thought. I closed my eyes, focused a little, and it was as easy as blinking. I felt a force rush through my body in a matter of seconds.
“That’s it, boy,” Adélia said.
“Now, take one parchment at a time in your hand and do the same thing.”
I did as she asked. The first parchment glowed blue when I started spinning the magical circle.
“I expected no less from the son of a water mage. The water element is compatible with you. Try another,” Adélia said.
I took the next one, and it glowed too, but this time in red.
“So, fire is also compatible with you. As the son of a warrior, that was expected,” Adélia said.
“Now, to finish, you can take the next ones. That way, we’ll complete the tests.”
I took the other two, and they glowed as well: one in green, the other in yellow.
“But this is impossible!” Adélia exclaimed, astonished.
The two assistants screamed hysterically. In disbelief at the result, she turned to Luna.
Luna brought her hands to her mouth, her face showing surprise.
Turning her eyes back to me, Adélia said:
“A quadra-elemental, huh? The blessings just keep coming, boy!”
“This has to be a joke. I’ve never heard of anyone like this, except in tales from the age of heroes,” Adélia said, scratching her head.
“Luna, do you realize how much this boy is worth in gold?” she asked.
“Don’t be an idiot,” Luna replied, releasing her battle aura for the first time in my presence. Everyone in the room fell silent. It felt like a ferocious beast was about to attack me. I instinctively brought my hand to my neck.
With that, Luna ran to me, shouting:
“Oh, I’m sorry, Randy!”
With the test over, Adélia and the assistants hurriedly packed up. Because of what had happened moments before, the assistants’ faces were pale with fear.
Adélia didn’t seem to care.
“You know I didn’t mean it badly,” she said.
“Yes,” Luna replied, her voice low and sounding embarrassed.
“This changes a lot. Since you’re married, I’ll come back when he’s here so we can figure out how things will unfold. In the meantime, remember what I told you!”
“Think about the reward. It’ll calm a lot of people and prevent a lot of trouble!” Adélia said.
“Understood! We’ll think of something!” Luna replied.
“Besides that, your son is very polite and intelligent. This test usually takes hours, but since he understands everything right away, it was very quick,” Adélia said.
“That’s just how Randy is!” Luna replied, a smile on her face and the expression of a proud mother.
And with that, they left!
